Wise Owl Services

The Orton Gillingham Online Academy is honored to introduce to you Wise Owl Services!

Phil and Lorna Wooldridge, the co-owners of Wise Owl Services are an amazing husband and wife duo with a true heart and passion for the population with Dyslexia.

It has been my privilege to get to know Phil and Lorna over the last year. Their zest for digging deep to bring us the most current and up-to-date Dyslexia resources is appreciated by so many. Their beautiful spirits and tenacity to heed to their higher calling of meeting the needs of those with learning differences, primarily Dyslexia, make this couple unique and inspiring. I am blessed our paths have crossed.

Welcome Phil & Lorna!

1.Tell me a little about your professional background & experiences

Lorna has a Bachelor of Education degree from Bath College of Higher Education in England, and holds a Certificate of Professional Practice from Roehampton Institute in London: Teaching Children with Reading and Writing Difficulties/Dyslexia. Lorna taught for many years in England, as both a classroom teacher and then working with small groups or individuals, teaching children with special educational needs. Lorna is certified by the Dyslexia Training Institute, and is experienced in the Orton-Gillingham approach. She has also completed the DTI Dyslexia Advocacy Certification Course and is currently training with the Orton-Gillingham Online Academy, and working on her Level 1 Certification with Handwriting Without Tears®. She is also listed as a tutor on the Learning Ally Reader Tutor Network. Lorna is dyslexic herself, which gives her a unique perspective.

Wise Owl Services provide a resource for the population with Dyslexia

Phil has a Master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and worked in industry for nearly 25 years, before changing careers. He taught high school math and science to their son and some of his peers, while he was homeschooled. It has been said that everyone should have three careers in their lifetime and two years ago, Phil left his job with Alcatel-Lucent to start a small-engine repair business, and to begin tutoring alongside Lorna.

Phil has experience with Susan Barton’s method for teaching students with dyslexia, and with the recently popularized focus on spelling through understanding word meaning and structure, which he is working to integrate with Orton-Gillingham.

3.What is Wise Owl Services?

Wise Owl Services offers help with reading, writing, spelling and handwriting, and specializes in tutoring students with dyslexia. Depending on the student’s proficiency in decoding, a reading fluency program can be incorporated into their program. The approach is cumulative, with each step as an essential building block for the next sequential step. Its repetitive nature allows a student to fully master skills, before moving on to new concepts at their own pace. Students learn to understand the rules of language, and how to apply their skill to become proficient readers, accurate spellers and creative writers.

As well as tutoring, Phil and Lorna offer hands-on educational workshops and presentations for children, teens and adults. Through these activities they hope to instill a love of nature and history in those that attend.

4. What additional resources does your web site offer?

As well as advertising their tutoring services, Phil & Lorna offer a dyslexia awareness page on their web site. They both very much admire the work of Decoding Dyslexia, NJ as well as the national movement they have created, and so they have included links to their web site as well as The Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity. Lorna has also created a Facebook page called Understanding Dyslexia and here she posts news, issues, resources, difficulties and success stories associated with dyslexia.

Their materials page offers a number of great resources that they highly recommend to others. They are currently developing a number of card games, which will help students develop their short term visual memory skills. They are planning to launch The Schoolhouse Games web page later this year.

6. What is the best way for people to reach you?

Phil & Lorna can be reached through their tutoring web site or by calling 908 637 8275.

I cannot thank Phil and Lorna enough for sharing their knowledge with others through their Wise Owl Services & for connecting with us at the Orton Gillingham Online Academy. We have gleaned so much through collaborating with them & we look forward to working closely with them in the future.

Keep doing what you are doing because the world needs what only you have to offer…
