She is a highly qualified, effective educator with twice National Board Certifications in Exceptional Student Education. She is a member of the Florida Council of Exceptional Children and an active member and presenter for the Florida Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.

She has worked as a general education and special education teacher at both Elementary and Secondary education levels, working with varying exceptionalities such as students with DYSLEXIA, DYSGRAPHIA, ADHD/ADD, and AUTISM, etc…

She has extensive training working with students who thrive with specialized interventions such as Orton- Gillingham based methods. The learning process can be a struggle for many students with conventional whole word reading teaching methods. Fortunately, most students thrive when given a multi-sensory structured language program tailored to improve their unique areas of deficit. Because the techniques used in every tutoring session follow a multi-sensory approach, games and manipulatives are incorporated into daily lessons, reinforcing previously learned concepts in a fun and engaging way.

Biographical Info

Educator for 16 years, mother of four, OG private tutor, Curriculum writer

I have been working with children from ages 1-12 since 1996 in a variety of settings. I started out as a daycare teacher working my way through college to become an elementary classroom teacher. My first class was a spunky group of third graders from the Boston area, back in 2000. I taught third and fourth during most of my twelve years of teaching, as well as fifth grade in the summer. My Master’s degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Literacy sparked my passion to create and design classroom materials. But my true love was helping children become successful readers.

I had a thirst for knowledge. How do I teach struggling readers and kids with dyslexia to learn how to read? My mission began back in 2003 and I haven’t stopped. My Orton-Gillingham certification through an IMSLEC accredited program transformed me.

Biographical Info

For thirty+ years, I have been working with children in various educational settings. I began my career as a elementary classroom teacher in California teaching K-3 physical education and 5-8 science.

From 1985-1998, I worked at Hellgate Elementary School as a Title I reading teacher for grades K-5 and as a classroom teacher in grades 2, 3, and 5. I left my teaching position to give my daughter the academic attention she needed at the time and as a result, I started up a small private K-8 school to help families whose children were experiencing learning difficulties. In order to meet the needs of the variety of ages I was instructing, I researched and built my own curriculum.

As my own children moved to Loyola High School, I continued to teach my other students, offered after-school writing classes to homeschooling families, and was a homebound tutor for Missoula County Public Schools. For the next several years, I taught in the Resource Room at Rattlesnake School and as a Title One teacher at Russell School in Missoula, MT. Currently I am a Resource Room teacher at Valley Christian School, with an emphasis in helping students with dyslexia.

Through a variety of professional experiences, I have honed my ability to inspire, guide and assist students with different learning styles. By recognizing and nurturing these unique needs, I employ a combination of kinesthetic, visual, auditory and alternative approaches so each child is given the opportunity to actively develop to their full potential. Since research in brain function indicates that children who are exposed to the arts and movement in their learning are found to excel in creative thinking, self esteem and problem solving, I try to integrate these and other multi-sensory activities into my tutoring when possible.

I have also been trained in Visualizing and Verbalizing, a Lindamood-Bell program and also have experience with the Lively Letters curriculum.

I feel fortunate to be able to work with them in a 1:1 supportive environment, where I can tailor each lesson to their individual needs. Susan Santora, founder and Clinical Director of Learning House, is a graduate of Connecticut College, received her master’s in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University, and advanced training in Supervision and Administration from the University of Connecticut. Her early career included teaching special education students and administration, as well as working for the Yale Child Study Center and Elmcrest Psychiatric Hospital. Over time her interest gravitated to the students who were having difficulty reading and she began intensive training in the Orton-Gillingham approach with nationally known educators Sally Childs and Alice Koontz. In 1983, Susan began offering specialized instruction in her Guilford home. Another teacher and a clinical psychologist joined her to provide instruction and diagnostic services to individuals with dyslexia and other learning disabilities and Learning House was born.

Additional teachers joined Learning House to receive supervision and experience in Orton-Gillingham. The approach is consistent with the criteria for research based reading instruction as outlined in the National Reading Panel (2000) directed by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Over time Learning House out grew Susan’s home office and relocated to the Church Street facility. Learning House now has a professional faculty of 12. My love of teaching reading started with time spent teaching in New Zealand. The beautiful whole language curriculum inspired a true love of reading and writing in my students. I had never observed anything like it! When I brought these practices back to the classroom, I realized that many of my students could simply not learn to read without direct instruction. After several years as a classroom teacher and curriculum coordinator, I began my OG journey. Teaching students the OG way was the missing piece in my instruction. Providing reading and language therapy for the last 16 years has been one of the greatest joys in my life.
